Streetlights Education Program (SLEP)

Through our Streetlights Education program (SLEP) in Partnership with St. Barnabas Primary school and Muyenga High School, 8 boys were fully enrolled in formal education and attending school consistently while 3 enrolled in vocational photography classes.

Teachers consistently described the learners as respectful, teachable, and eager to learn, reflecting the positive influence of stable care, structured mentorship, and a supportive learning environment. Throughout the year, most children demonstrated improved or sustained academic performance across subjects. One learner achieved an Art Grade A, highlighting the program's effectiveness in nurturing creative strengths alongside formal education.

Home Schooling

The home-schooling program was initiated to help children transition back into structured education after a prolonged period outside formal schooling. Facilitated by Petra, John, and Joshua, this initiative focuses primarily on reading, writing, and numeracy, which are essential life skills.

Even for those who may not reintegrate into formal schooling, this program ensures they attain basic literacy and numeracy, empowering them with fundamental knowledge for self-sufficiency.

School Enrolment Interviews

To facilitate school reintegration, academic interviews were conducted to assess each child's learning level and determine appropriate class placement.

While some children met the required standards for their targeted grades, others were placed in lower classes to better match their academic readiness. This careful placement process ensured that all children were enrolled in grades where they could learn confidently, receive adequate support, and progress steadily.

Academic Monitoring

Targeted academic monitoring was strengthened through an Academic Visitation Day conducted twice every school term for all the three terms. During these visits, the Streetlights Uganda team engaged directly with teachers to assess academic progress, classroom adjustment, and overall well-being.

While learning gaps were identified in Mathematics and Science, these findings informed tailored academic support strategies and recommendations for improvement.

"Despite challenges such as delayed school fees, long travel distances, and weather disruptions, the children showed strong resilience and commitment to learning. By year's end, 60% ranked among the top 30 students in classes of approximately 50, with exam results reflecting steady progress and clear academic potential, underscoring the value of consistent educational support and holistic care."
